Our Road Trip, Last stop Wales. Sorry Kalbarri!

As I mentioned before Gareth and I played 'Count the carcasses' to keep ourselves amused on the way to Coral Bay. So on our way south to go to Kalbarri we decided to play it again on the same 50km stretch, There were sooo many more it was just gross!!

We stopped in Carnavon to pick up some fresh bananas as it is one of the main places here where they grow them. I bought one bag thinking that would be enough, but they tasted so good! I should have got a lot more!

Shortly after we had to drive on a bridge over a river, only there was no water!

As we drove closer to Kalbarri we had a few bugs hit our window screen, and then suddenly it sounded like we were being hit by a thousand hailstones all at once! It was unbelievably disgusting, we couldn't see a thing and the wipers weren't able to work enough to clean them off. There was only one thing for it, we had to stop and clean it off properly, ergh!

We started to drive again, and we could just see that we were about to be hit again, and there was nothing we could do. It did look amazing seeing this massive swarm coming towards us though. Just as we thought we were away from all the bugs, We got on to the road that leads to Kalbarri and it happened again! We had to stop and clean our car again! This was not fun!

We finally got to our accommodation and it was soooo nice! We had a 2 bedroom Spa suite! A kitchen including a microwave, full size fridge, a private bbq on the balcony, a bedroom for us with a big spa bath, separate shower, washing machine with tumble dryer (just like ours), a bedroom for the boys with their own shower room. Jacob had a queen size bed all to himself and Ollie had a single bed which they were both so pleased with, and a lounge area. It was really nice not sharing with the boys and not having to sit in the car in the evening!

We only had 2 nights booked in Kalbarri, so only one full day to do anything. We decided to drive to a lookout in the national park, called the 'z bend' so about 30km from where we were staying. We read the sign and decided that the shorter walk was better for us as we couldn't take the trailer for the boys. (We hadn't taken a pushchair as the trailer can be changed in to one). The boys did great and the view was amazing looking out over the gorge. There was a group there and one of the ladies offered to take a photo for us and then we would do the same for them, except there were 9 of them each wanting us to use their camera! It was very funny! Unfortunately ours didn't come out all that great so I can't post it.

As the walk had been a lot quicker than we had thought, we decided to go down to the gorge. It was a class 4 hike, which means it is meant for experienced hikers, and it has tricky bits, like ladders. We just said that we would see how far we could get and turn around if we needed to. It was such a fun hike. Massive boulders to climb over, ladders with big drops, the boys loved it! I admit it was a lot harder going down than we thought, but we just took our time and enjoyed it. I had Jacob and Gareth had Ollie. We saw some people rock climbing and abseiling too, Jacob said that he would really like to do that too!

Finally, We made it all the way to the bottom! It was lovely and warm compared to being in amongst all the rocks and cliffs.

The way up was so much easier, Jacob and Ollie really enjoyed climbing by themselves, so much so that Ollie would run fast to the next part just so he could climb again.

For our last morning we went to the beach to see the pelicans being fed, which apparently happens everyday at 8.45am. However, this particular morning everyone was waiting, including the pelicans, and no-one showed. This was very disappointing for Jacob and Ollie who had been looking forward to it. We were also going to hire a small motor boat and go along the river for an hour, but it started raining quite heavily. Plan b was to go to the Rainbow Jungle, a place to see beautiful parrots. But that is an outdooor place and we didn't want to get soaked. Plan c was to go to the sea horse aquarium, but that is closed on mondays. Plan d was another fun place, that I can't remember the name of right now, but that is closed until 10am. We didn't want to wait until then just sat in the car, so very disappointed we decided that we would just start making our way home. We found a lovely spot to stop for lunch, but as it had been raining lots and it was very windy we sat in the car to eat.

And, just to prove that we were actually in Wales.
